About Us

“Rockland Homes for Heroes" is a private, not-for-profit 501[c]3, non-government, Volunteer-managed Corporation, created to provide supportive, permanent, affordable rental apartments for honorably discharged disabled and displaced [homeless] Veterans as a living memorial to the historic military land on which the apartments stand.

It is Camp Shanks, “Last Stop USA”, for the 1.3 million GIs gathered from all over America from 1943 t0 1944 for their preparation to sail to Europe to await the D-Day invasion on the Beaches of France and the bloody fighting with the Nazi Army to VE-Day in Berlin. Most of the GI’s killed on the Omaha and Utah Beaches passed through "Last Stop USA”.

While any Honorably discharged Veteran, man or woman, who meets the Federal Government criteria of being homeless is eligible for our services, we are focused to work for the homeless in the Lower Hudson Valley Counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, Westchester, which are served by the Montrose and Castle Point VA campuses.
